Education: childhood and adolescence

Public schools through high school. (3.5+ GPA) Excelled in all areas of particular interest.

Piano lessons with Maryhelen Garoutte (mom) as a child. String bass, recorder, chorus in grade school. Trumpet & baritone horn with Burgess Crandall, and continual self-motivated guitar studies of the playing and music of John Fogerty, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, James Taylor, Keith Richards, Alvin Lee, B.B. King, Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Mason Williams, Terry Kath, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins, and many more while in junior high and high school.

Poetry with Betty Ragsdale in high school, leading to songwriting efforts inspired by Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, David Gates, John Mayall, Rod Stewart, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and many more.

Years of daily exposure through childhood and adolescence to classical, broadway and adult contemporary popular music through the playing and listening of my mom, via composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the playing and conducting of a variety of great artists and performers like Sinatra, Isaac Stern, Rubinstein, Leonard Berstein, Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin’s In The Field, and so on, leading to an interest in composition in a wide variety of styles.

Education: adulthood

B.S. in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on Art & Business at Eastern Oregon University.

Continual self-motivated studies of composition and songwriting and performance of an ever-evolving variety of artists and folk, rock, rhythm & blues, blues, jazz, country, funk, pop, indie, experimental, traditional, bluegrass, old-timey, classical, neo-classical and other styles.

Studies on guitar with Larry Adair, Marv Lundblade, John Stowell.

45+ years playing in bands of all sizes, duo pairings and as a solo artist.

30+ years of teaching guitar, bass and ukulele.
